Sustainable Infrastructure for Municipalities

Energy-efficient and resource-saving over the life cycle

Sustainability is a central component of our life cycle approach in municipal infrastructure construction. Our sustainability strategy is based on the HOCHTIEF Sustainability Plan 2025 and is aligned with the three ESG pillars: environmental, social and governance. We act responsibly in all areas – with a particular focus on the four areas described below. In this way, we are making a concrete contribution to sustainable, future-proof infrastructure for cities and communities.

Optimizing the Life Cycle, Strengthening the Circular Economy

We use life cycle analyses to optimize our projects over their entire service life – from planning to dismantling. We actively promote a circular economy in the construction industry by using resource-saving techniques, reducing waste, and using recycled materials. For example, more than 90% of the old asphalt was reused for the highway A6 expansion near Sinsheim. Sustainable construction methods such as the modular timber construction of our YEXIO data centers significantly reduce the ecological footprint of municipal infrastructure projects.

Energy Efficiency for a Green Future

We invest in green energy and sustainable infrastructure measures to continuously reduce the greenhouse gas emissions of our operations. We rely on renewable energies, make our buildings more energy-efficient, recycle waste heat and promote environmentally friendly mobility. One example is the energy-efficient refurbishment of the Hessian riot police: insulation, new windows, photovoltaic systems, and a wood chip system will save more than 14,000 tons of CO – a real contribution to climate protection in the public building sector.

Sustainability –
Tested and Certified

Our commitment to sustainable construction is demonstrable: we strive for recognized sustainability certificates – such as DGNB, BNB, Blauer Engel and BREEAM. The ViA6West project used solar energy, e-charging stations, and sustainable construction methods, among other things. The award of the first DGNB Gold certificate for a transport infrastructure project and recognition by the United Nations underline our pioneering role in certified sustainable infrastructure construction.

Focus on People

For us, sustainability also means social responsibility. The health and safety of our employees is our top priority – through training (e.g. via TOUGH, our VR training software), hazard prevention and partnership-based cooperation on the construction site. We also promote well-being through job bikes, sports facilities, and a healthy work-life balance. Diversity, inclusion and equal opportunities in recruitment and management culture are just as important to us as investing in education, mentoring, and promoting young talent.
