HOCHTIEF hands over energy-efficient Heilbronn depot to Waterways and Shipping Authority

Integrated model combines construction, renewable energy and long-term operations

HOCHTIEF PPP Solutions has completed and handed over a new maintenance depot for the Neckar Waterways and Shipping Authority (WSA) at Zukunftspark Wohlgelegen in Heilbronn, near Stuttgart. HOCHTIEF planned and delivered the facility and will operate it through to 2050 under an integrated model that combines construction, energy and long-term asset management.

The site has been designed for efficient, low-emissions operation. A high-performance photovoltaic system, supported by battery storage, enables a largely self-sufficient energy supply and reduces reliance on the grid. The photovoltaic system is financed and operated by HOCHTIEF Solarpartner. Thanks to a long-term electricity supply contract with HOCHTIEF, the WSA Neckar benefits from stable, predictable energy costs. The new depot thus makes a concrete contribution to climate protection and furthermore aims to support the maintenance of the Neckar infrastructure.

The development delivers around 2,300 square metres of modern office, workshop and storage space, alongside upgraded waterway access and electric vehicle charging infrastructure. The project was completed in 24 months and has been awarded a Silver rating under Germany’s Sustainable Building Assessment System (BNB). HOCHTIEF has operated the facility since December 2025.

The energy system is designed to optimise on-site consumption. The photovoltaic system installed by ingenia projects has a capacity of 438 kWp and is expected to generate around 415 MWh annually. A 215 kWh battery system captures surplus generation, supports overnight demand and significantly reduces peak loads and grid usage.

“Public infrastructure must be planned with its long-term operation in mind,” said Peter Coenen, CEO of HOCHTIEF PPP Solutions. “By integrating construction, energy systems and operations from the outset, we are giving WSA Neckar reliable performance and cost certainty over decades.”

The new depot also supports broader urban development. Relocation from the former Mannheimer Straße site frees up land for the City of Heilbronn to expand the Dieter Schwarz Foundation education campus.
